NATIONWIDE AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT 2009-2010

The awards are explained below, along with the application process, application eligibility requirements, timeline and the review process.

Nationwide Awards and Grants Program Portfolio:
We are pleased to announce that the following awards will be offered for 2009-2010:

INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATOR AWARDS
RESEARCH GRANTS

  • Biomedical Research Grants (RG): $40,000/yr. Seed monies for investigators researching the mechanisms of lung disease and general lung biology. Duration: up to two years.
  • Clinical Patient Care Research Grant (CG): $40,000/yr. Seed monies for investigators working on traditional clinical studies examining methods for improving patient care and treatment for lung disease. Duration: up to two years.
  • Social-Behavioral Research Grant (SB): $40,000/yr. Seed monies for investigators working on epidemiological and behavioral studies examining risk factors affecting lung health. This grant includes studies concerning the ethical, legal, and economic aspects of health services and policies. Duration: up to two years.

CAREER INVESTIGATOR (CI): $60,000/yr. Intended to support the career development of established independent investigators who show great promise for a national leadership role in investigative work related to lung disease biology, traditional clinical studies related to patient care, behavioral and psycho-social matters relevant to lung disease. Duration: up to three years.

TRAINING AWARDS

  • Lung Health Dissertation Grant (LH): $21,000/yr. Pre-doctoral support for students with an academic career focus and/or nurses pursuing a doctoral degree. Research areas of particular interest to the American Lung Association are: psychosocial, behavioral, health services, health policy, epidemiological, biostatistical and educational matters related to lung disease. Duration: up to two years.
  • Senior Research Training Fellowship (RT): $32,500/yr. Post-doctoral support for MDs and/or PhDs seeking further academic training as scientific investigators. Research areas of particular interest to the American Lung are: adult pulmonary medicine, pediatric pulmonary medicine and lung biology. Duration: up to two years.
  • Nursing Post-Doctoral Award (NP): $15,000/yr. Nurses entering the 1st and 2nd year of their post-doctoral training as scientific investigators. Research areas of particular interest to the American Lung Association are: psychosocial, behavioral, health services, health policy, epidemiological, biostatistical and education matters related to lung disease. Duration: up to two years.

ALLIANCE AWARD PROGRAM
The American Lung Association research program provides opportunities to focus on targeted lung disease/health issues as well as work with like-minded medical societies in the funding of high-level lung disease research. Major donor sponsors and partners of the American Lung Association support these special research initiatives. These post-doctoral awards are available in the following award categories and areas of emphasis.

CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE

  • American Lung Association / Alpha-1 Foundation Research Grant (AL): $40,000/yr. Focused on basic science and clinical research studies of AAT Deficiency and COPD. Duration: up to two years.
  • American Lung Association / COPD Foundation Research Grant (CP): $100,000/yr. Focused on the treatment or cure of bronchiectasis. Duration: up to two years.

INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASE

  • American Lung Association / Dalsemer Research Grant (DA): $40,000/yr. Focused on interstitial lung disease. Duration: up to two years.

LYMPHANGIOLEIOMYOMATOSIS (LAM)

  • American Lung Association / LAM Foundation Research Grant (LR): $40,000/yr. Focused on the abnormal proliferation of smooth muscle that occurs in Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). Duration: up to two years.
  • American Lung Association / LAM Foundation Career Investigator Award (LC): $60,000/yr. Focused on the abnormal proliferation of smooth muscle that occurs in Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). Duration: up to three years.

LUNG CANCER

  • American Lung Association / LUNGevity Foundation Lung Cancer Discovery Award (LCD): $100,000/yr. Focused on novel medical treatments or a cure for lung cancer. Duration: up to two years.
  • American Lung Association / Diane Emdin Sachs Lung Cancer Award (DE): $75,000/yr. Focused on advancing small cell lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. Duration: up to two years.

NONTUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIAL INFECTIONS (NTM)

  • American Lung Association/NTM Info and Research Career Investigator Award: $60,000/yr. Focused on pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial infection and related infections. Duration: up to three years.

Application Process
Application materials are available online at https://proposalcentral.altum.com. It is strongly recommended that applicants first read through the Program Descriptions to determine eligibility and the Program Instructions to ensure accurate preparation of an application. For applicants interested in the ALA/LUNGevity Lung Cancer Discovery Award, a letter of intent is required.

Those applicants who are not eligible for a particular grant/award, or who do not follow the instructions provided, will be automatically disqualified. There will be no exceptions.

A letter of intent is only required for the ALA/LUNGevity Lung Cancer Discovery Award.

Local Lung Association Offerings
Local Lung Associations may offer funding opportunities in addition to the nationwide portfolio above. These local awards include the:

  • Local Biomedical-Clinical Grant (AR)
  • Local Junior-Senior Research Training Fellowship (AF)
  • Local Career Investigator (AC)

Funding levels, duration and eligibility requirements for these awards may differ from the Nationwide portfolio and can vary from one local Lung Association to another. To find out more about local award offerings, applicants must contact their respective Lung Association regarding local:

  1. program description,
  2. application requirements and
  3. terms and conditions.

Local Lung Association contact information can be found in the individual grant program descriptions on proposalCENTRAL, https://proposalcentral.altum.com.

If the applicant wishes to submit a local application, he or she must obtain an authorization code from their local Lung Association. This authorization code is required to complete a local application on proposalCENTRAL.

Local funding decisions are made according to the priorities of that Association and local applications will not be considered for national funding.

Application Eligibility Requirements
Overall requirements are as follows:

  • Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen or a foreign national holding one of the following visa immigration statuses: Permanent resident, student visa (F-1), exchange visitor (J-1), temporary worker in a specialty occupation (H-1, H-1B), Canadian or Mexican citizen engaging in professional activities (TC, TN), or a temporary worker with extraordinary abilities in the sciences (O-1).
    Non-citizens must submit a notarized copy of proof of possession of one of the above
  • Applicants must be employed by a U.S. not for profit institution at the time of application and throughout the award.
  • Applicants are only allowed to submit one application for this review cycle. Once an application is submitted, a change from one award type to another is not possible.

Timeline for the 2009-10 ALA Research Program

May 2008 – Applicants are invited to submit grant applications
June 2008 – Deadline for Lung Cancer Discovery Award (LCD) Letter of Intent
July 2008 – LCD Applicants are invited to submit grant applications
September 2008 – Submission Deadline for grant applications
October/November 2008 – Peer Review Committee Meetings
February 2009 – Award notifications sent to applicants
July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010 – Award Period
July 1, 2009 – First payment made
January 1, 2010 – Second payment made

Review Process
All applications, whether National or Local, receive peer review for scientific merit by the American Lung Association committees on research review. Each application is assigned to two reviewers. The American Lung Association recruits accomplished and diverse peer reviewers and instructs them that their exclusive responsibility is to assess each proposal on its merits. Local Lung Associations are required to await the report on scientific merit following the national peer review process indicating the applicant is eligible or not eligible for funding.
