NATIONWIDE AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT

2010-2011

The awards are explained below, along with the application process, application eligibility requirements, timeline and the review process.

Nationwide Awards and Grants Program Portfolio:

We are pleased to announce that the following awards will be offered in 2010-2011:

TRAINING AWARDS

Lung Health Dissertation Grant: $21,000/yr. Pre-doctoral support for nurses or students with an academic career focused on the various disciplines of social science. Research areas of particular interest to the American Lung Association are: psychosocial, behavioral, health services, health policy, epidemiological, biostatistical and educational matters related to lung disease. Duration: up to two years.

Senior Research Training Fellowship: $32,500/yr. Post-doctoral support for MDs and/or PhDs receiving further academic training as scientific investigators. Research areas of particular interest to the American Lung Association are: adult pulmonary medicine, pediatric pulmonary medicine and lung biology. Duration: up to two years.

INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATOR AWARDS

Biomedical Research Grant: $40,000/yr. Provides seed monies for investigators researching the mechanisms of lung disease and general lung biology. Duration: up to two years.

Clinical Patient Care Research Grant: $40,000/yr. Provides seed monies for investigators working on traditional clinical studies examining methods of improving patient care and/or treatment for lung disease. Duration: up to two years.

Social-Behavioral Research Grant: $40,000/yr.  Provides seed monies for investigators working on epidemiological and behavioral studies examining risk factors affecting lung health. This grant includes studies concerning the ethical, legal and economic aspects of health services and policies. Duration: up to two years.

ALLIANCE AWARDS

American Lung Association / AAAAI Allergic Respiratory Diseases Award: $50,000/yr.  Supports research on allergic respiratory disease.   Duration: up to two years.

American Lung Association / The CHEST Foundation: $40,000/yr.  Supports clinical research on asthma.   Duration: up to two years.

American Lung Association Dalsemer Research Grant: $40,000/yr.   Supports research on interstitial lung disease. Duration: up to two years.

American Lung Association / LUNGevity Foundation Lung Cancer Discovery Award: $100,000/yr. Supports research on novel medical treatments or cures for lung cancer. Duration: up to two years.


Application Process

Application materials are available online at https://proposalcentral.altum.com. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that applicants first read through the Program Descriptions (located as an icon directly adjacent to Award Title) to determine eligibility and the Program Instructions (located under the FAQ column) to ensure accurate preparation of an application. For applicants interested in the ALA/LUNGevity Lung Cancer Discovery Award, a letter of intent is required.  A letter of intent is only required for the ALA/LUNGevity Lung Cancer Discovery Award.

Those applicants who are not eligible for a particular grant/award, or who do not follow the instructions provided, will be automatically disqualified. There will be no exceptions.

Application Eligibility Requirements

Overall requirements are as follows:

  • Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen or a foreign national holding one of the following visa immigration statuses: Permanent resident, student visa (F-1), exchange visitor (J-1), temporary worker in a specialty occupation (H-1, H-1B), Canadian or Mexican citizen engaging in professional activities (TC, TN), or a temporary worker with extraordinary abilities in the sciences (O-1).     

    Non-citizens must submit a notarized copy of proof of possession of one of the above
  • Applicants must be employed by a U.S. not for profit institution at the time of application and throughout the award.
  • Applicants are only allowed to submit one application per review cycle. Once an application is submitted, a change from one award type to another is not possible. Applicants who apply for more than one grant or award will forfeit any chance of funding.

Timeline for the 2010-11 ALA Research Program

June 2009 – Applicants are invited to submit grant applications

July 2009 – Deadline for Lung Cancer Discovery Award (LCD) Letter of Intent

August 2009 – LCD Applicants are invited to submit grant applications

October 2009 – Applications Due

January 2010 – Peer Review Committee Meetings

April 2010 – Award notifications sent to applicants

July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011 – Award Period

     July 1, 2010 – First payment made

     January 1, 2011 – Second payment made


Review Process

All applications receive peer review for scientific merit by the American Lung Association Research Committees. Each application is assigned to two reviewers. The American Lung Association recruits accomplished and diverse peer reviewers and instructs them that their exclusive responsibility is to assess each proposal on its merits. Local Lung Associations are required to await the report on scientific merit following the national peer review process indicating the applicant is eligible or not eligible for funding.
