Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public and the business community, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors to the American Lung Association, have the right to:

  1. Be informed of the American Lung Association mission, of the way the American Lung Association intends to use donated resources, and of the capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purpose.
  2. Be informed of the identity of those serving on the American Lung Association Board and to expect the Board to exercise prudent judgment in stewardship responsibilities.
  3. Have access to the American Lung Association’s most recent financial statements.
  4. Be assured that your gifts will be used for the purposes for which you have given them.
  5. Receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
  6. Be assured that information about your donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  7. Expect that all relationships with individuals representing the American Lung Association will be professional in nature.
  8. Be informed whether those seeking support are volunteers or employees of the American Lung Association or hired solicitors.
  9. Feel free to ask questions when making a gift and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.
