In January 2006, the American Lung Association issued its Smokefree Air 2010 Challenge calling on all states and local communities to pass comprehensive smokefree laws as soon as possible, but no later than 2010 to protect people across the U.S. from secondhand smoke.

Since we issued our 2010 Challenge, 14 states and the District of Columbia have passed comprehensive smokefree laws; in total 23 states and the District of Columbia have passed such laws. The map above shows which states have currently passed smokefree laws and you can click on a year below the map to see our progress over time.
