In January 2006, the American Lung Association issued its Smokefree Air Challenge calling on all states and local communities to pass comprehensive smokefree laws as soon as possible, to protect people across the U.S. from secondhand smoke.
Since we issued our Challenge, 16 states and the District of Columbia have passed comprehensive smokefree laws; in total 25 states and the District of Columbia have passed such laws. The map above shows which states have currently passed smokefree laws and you can click on a year below the map to see our progress over time.
