Air Quality

Californians breathe some of the worst air in the nation, with 90 percent of us living in areas with unhealthy air. High levels of air pollution bring an increased risk for lung health problems, including aggravating asthma and COPD, and making us more susceptible to respiratory infections. Our programs are designed to inform you about the quality of air in your area, and provide you with steps you can take to improve it.

FLAG Program

Flag ProgramRed, green, orange or yellow, the FLAG program is a school-based educational program that lets everyone know the day's air quality. Participating schools are provided a set of colored flags they can fly everyday, with each colored flag representing a different level of air pollution.

The flags are color-coded according to the official air quality index:

  • Green = good
  • Yellow = moderate
  • Orange = unhealthy for sensitive people (like those afflicted with asthma)
  • Red = unhealthy air for everyone

Schools are notified daily by their local air pollution control district about the air quality, so schools can fly the right colored flag. Officials can then opt to adjust their outdoor activities according to the level of air pollution to help protect the health of the children.
