Fight for Tobacco Control
Tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death and disease in California. Despite significant gains in the last 20 years, four million Californians still smoke, and smoking kills nearly 40,000 people every year. Every day, the tobacco industry wages a multi-million dollar campaign that glamorize smoking, and more than 36,000 kids start smoking each year in California.

Special Projects
Center for Tobacco Policy and Organizing
The American Lung Association in California's Center for Tobacco Policy and Organizing helps local communities with tobacco policy objectives by using community organizing strategies and providing public policy resources and guidance. The Center tracks tobacco industry campaign contributions and provides policy information and analysis for significant tobacco control bills, emerging issues like tobacco retailer licensing and smoke-free multi-unit housing, and breaking news stories.
Reducing Illegal Sales of Tobacco to Kids
The American Lung Association in California coordinates the recruitment of teenagers to assist law enforcement with compliance with the state law that prohibits selling tobacco to minors. Using the enforcement provisions of the STAKE Act or Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement Act, the American Lung Association in California is helping to ensure that tobacco retailers are obeying the law prohibiting the sale of tobacco to minors.
