American Lung Association Urges Everyone to Get a Flu Shot

Flu Clinic Locator Available at flucliniclocator.org to Help People Find Local Seasonal Flu Vaccination Clinics and Stay Healthy

(September 8, 2009)

The American Lung Association is making it easier for people to get their seasonal flu shot this year with the availability of its 2009-2010 Flu Clinic Locator. The largest online directory of public seasonal influenza vaccination clinics is now available at flucliniclocator.org.

This easy-to-use online resource is searchable by ZIP code. It also provides the option to set up an appointment e-mail reminder and to sign up for influenza-specific updates throughout the season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently expanded its recommendations for annual vaccination to include all children six months through 18 years of age. The recommendations also include the elderly, those with chronic diseases such as asthma, pregnant women and caregivers of those at risk.

Each year, seasonal influenza and its complications result in an average of 226,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths in the U.S. The only way to protect yourself and your family is to get a flu shot. .

The American Lung Association notes that the potential severity of the H1N1 virus (swine flu) remains uncertain at this time. Special recommendations, including possible H1N1 vaccination guidelines, may be issued by the CDC for children and adults who are at greater risk for complications from influenza. All are urged to be watchful for CDC updates and instructions regarding receiving the H1N1 vaccine.

In the meantime, there are some measures you can take to protect yourself from both seasonal and H1N1 flu:

  • Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap. Sing the birthday song twice to make certain you have washed long enough.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Stay out of large crowns.
  • Cough into your sleeve. Don’t go to work or school if you are sick.
