American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic

Welcome to the the American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic, serving the areas of Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Our site contains information on asthma, tobacco, air quality, and other lung diseases. We are dedicated to providing you with the most up to date information available to help you as we move forward in our quest to fight lung disease and promote lung health.

We offer a number of programs throughout the state that are designed to help people quit smoking, learn to live with and control their asthma, prevent children from smoking, and many other lung health problems. Contributions of time, money and event sponsorships to the ALAMA help those who suffer with lung disease through mission driven programs and activities.

  • Asthma Educator Institute
The Asthma Educator Institute is a preparatory course for those qualified to take the National Asthma Educator Certification Exam sponsored by the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB). The role of the asthma educator has increased over the past decade as research has documented the importance of patient education in effective asthma management. This course provides education on asthma management techniques and teaches participants how to develop and implement effective asthma education programs. The 2-day course includes hand-on skills demonstrations and practice as well as evaluation tests to measure increase in knowledge and skills. Asthma Education is reimbursable. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMS) provides the regulatory guidelines for services, procedures and supplies covered under the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Specifics of reimbursement differ slightly from state to state, but one constant is the education must be done by a certified asthma educator. The American Lung Association’s Asthma Educator Institute is a healthcare professional’s first step to becoming an AE-C.
